Mangaluru, Jan 18: A tube light was tossed at the residence of a person who had opposed Azan and discourses by use of microphone in Smart City commercial and residential complex at Thokkottu Junction. The person who came out to question this behaviour was assaulted by a gang of people belonging to another religion.
The person who came under attack was Gangadhar, who lies by the side of Thokkottu Smart City complex. Both Gangadhar and a local, Theresa D'Souza, had complained about a year back to Ullal police station and Ullal municipality in writing, about the disturbances caused by the creation of prayer hall in the second floor of the commercial building where Azan prayer calls and discourses were being aired by using microphone without authorization. It is said that the officials of the police station and municipality had promised to take action against the illegal act.
Gangadhar says that tube light was tossed at his residence on Wednesday evening from the prayer hall of the building. He then visited the prayer hall located in the second floor of the complex and questioned the people there. The young people who were present there, Gangadhar says, attacked him with chairs and hands indiscriminately.
As Ullal police inspector, Gopikrishna, and other personnel intervened, a major problem in the making was averted, it is said.
At the same time, on behalf o the prayer hall, a complaint was filed in Ullal police station, accusing Gangadhar of suddenly rushing into the prayer hall illegally and behaving in a rude manner. The complainants have sought action against Gangadhar.
Police officials said that Gangadhar could have informed them if there were any wrongs on the part of the commercial complex. They said that they reached the spot on time and saved Gangadhar, who stands admitted into hospital. They added that they would verify complaints from both sides and take suitable action.
