Udupi, Dec 29: The schools in the state have declared Christmas-New Year holidays by pruning down the Dasara holidays. The parents, taking advantage of this, have been flocking to their natives places to visit their families, take part in functions, etc. At the same time, tourists and pilgrims have also sought to utilize the opportinity by undertaking short-term tours and pilgrimages. This also happens to be the time when the non-resident Indians residing in various countries particularly the gulf region, visit their native places.
Both Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts have been witnessing an increased influx of visitors these days. It is estimated, that everyday, over 25,000 devotees have been partaking the Krishna Prasada (free lunch at Srikrishna Math) these days , which is a record. Dhamastala, Kateel, Subrahmanya and Kollur too have registered a sudden increase in the number of visitors.
Restaurants and lodges have been doing brisk business and many visitors were seen struggling to get an accommodation.
The situation has worsened as even people on a visit to the homes of their close ones, choose to stay in lodges, as they do not want to create problems for their hosts. The number of lodges available is limited and is sufficient to take care of the normal crowds. Whenever the number of visitors swell, as seen during the summer holidays, buses get overcrowded, lodges are full, it becomes difficult to get vehicles on hire and huge rush is seen at the tourist destinations and pilgrimage centres.
