Mangaluru, Jan 8: BJP Dakshina Kannada district spokesperson, Harikrishna Bantwal, said that UPA government at the centre led by Congress party was responsible for beginning the process of merger of Vijaya Bank with Bank of Baroda.
Addressing a press conference at the BJP office in the city on Monday January 7, Harikrishna noted that since the last few days, Congress leaders from the district have been accusing the union government led by BJP for the said merger. He claimed that the then Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh and finance minister, Chidambaran, had set into motion the merger initiative during the year 2011-12.
He noted that it is but natural for Vijaya Bank to get merged with Bank of Baroda, which has a turnover amounting to six times that of Vijaya Bank.
He challenged Congress party to name the road in the city identified for the purpose after Mulky Sundaram Shetty within a week. He offered to join hands with Congress leaders in their hunger strike if they succeed in doing this.
BJP leaders, Jitendra Kottary, Sathish Prabu, Sanjay prabhu, Pooja Pai, Prabha Malini, Sandhya Vehkatesh and Bhaskarchandra Shetty, were present.
