Mangalore, Dec 16: The small crack that appeared in the bridge built across river Pavanje near Haleangady about two months back on the national highway 17, has worsened into a yawning fissure, creating doubts about the safety of the bridge and the highway traffic. As heavy vehicles continue to pound the crack all through the day and the night, the crack which looked harmless some days back, has suddenly threatened to throw the traffic out of gear.
Often the wheels of vehicles, particularly the smaller ones, get caught in the crack, resulting in traffic snarls. If the bridge gets damaged, the movement of vehicles on the highway which serves as the lifeline of the twin-districts will come to a grinding halt. It is high time the authorities take note of the serious implications of the crack and take remedial steps.
