Panaji, Dec 6: Goa Police will train its Home Guard and Civil Defence Volunteers to tackle the modern day challenges and also disasters, State Director General of Police Muktesh Chandar said on Thursday.
Chandar was addressing an even to mark Home Guard and Civil Defence Services Day at Police Headquarters here.
The DGP lauded that unlike Delhi police, the Home Guards in Goa have been taking their duties more seriously and more likely as a career.
He said that the Home Guards and Civil Defence in Goa has been active but they also need to be trained to tackle modern day challenges.
Goa has around 1,500 Home Guards who are usually deployed for regulation of Traffic in various cities.
“We have been imparting training to the Home Guards and Civil Defence Volunteers from time to time but the modern day challenges are increasing,” the DGP said.
“We have seen Mumbai type of (terror) attack. We have seen disasters of various types and there is a need that even our home guards and civil defence volunteers must receive adequate training to deal with various kind of new type of disasters which may occur,” he said.
Chandar said that in order to maintain communal harmony, civil defence has always been playing a great role.
“We must find out training program in Nagpur (Maharashtra) for civil defence academy as well as at other places and also design some courses where home guards and civil defence volunteers can be trained for some other extra skills in order to deal with modern day challenges,” he said.
“We have got a vacancy of about 200 home guards and I am sure government will give permission very soon to fill these vacancies,” the DGP added.
Chandar also said that the role of home guards should be expanded to various social issues that affect the society.
“I got a survey done and I found that many people use the helmet but don’t tie the straps. If you believe in helmet you should tie it properly, use quality helmet,” he added.
“Home guard and civil defence can try to spread the message on road and all kind of safety to entire society at large,” DGP said.
