Kundapur, Nov 23: "In the constitution itself, panchayats are given more power. The grant that is given to panchayat should not be used for any other purpose. Panchayats should get the grant directly from the finance commission. The panchayats should become self-reliant by taking decisions themselves and implementing the projects," said Shobha Karandlaje, MP of Udupi - Chikkamagalur Lok Sabha constitution.
Shobha was speaking after inaugurating the clean drinking water unit that is implemented under the Member of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLAD) at Gopadi gram panchayat in the taluk.
Continuing her address Shobha said, "The centre is giving homes to homeless people with the intention of ensuring that in the year 2020 there should not be a single Indian who does not have his or her own home. State also has to cooperate in this noble cause. Panchayats carry special importance and responsibility. The work of Gopadi panchayat is laudable."

Enough grant is being given from Integrated Tribal Development Project (ITDP) also for the development of Koraga community. That needs to be utilized too," added Shobha.
