Udupi, Nov 20: U R Sabapathi, president, All India fishermen congress committee, said that he has led a delegation of fishermen from Karnataka on Monday, November 19 to Goa and requested the government of Goa to revoke the ban on the fish that is supplied from the state to Goa.

Sabapathi was speaking at the press conference that was held in Udupi press club on Tuesday, November 20.

Giving the details of the meeting, Sabapathi further said, “Goa government has banned fish from Karnataka because of false information that chemicals are being used in Karnataka to preserve fish. The delegation met, held discussions and submitted an appeal to the Goa fisheries minister Vinod Dattaram Palyanker and minister of food supplies Biswajit Rane.

Fisheries minister of Goa has clarified that there is no ban on the import of fish from Karnataka but officials in Goa border check posts are sending the trucks laden with fish back without proper information. The delegation also requested the Goa government to relax the rule of transporting the fish in refrigerated containers only. Goa government has assured that it will hold a meeting in this regard with the fishermen of Goa within three days.”

National chief secretary Peeru M Sab, national secretary Kiran Kumar, Udupi district vice-president Ramesh Thingalaya, Upendra Mendon and Akram Ali were present in the news conference.
