Udupi, Nov 19: MLA, K Raghupati Bhat opined that creating awareness among the people about the need to follow traffic rules is more effective than just enforcement of rules.
He was speaking at a programme, 'follow traffic rules for safe driving' organized at Malpe beach on Sunday November 18 by the district police department and Ambalpady Rotary Club.
"In the past, polio had spread like epidemic all over the world and robbed the livelihood of thousands of people. After Rotary took a pledge to eradicate polio by spreading awareness at the international level, polio has almost been driven away. Now it has taken up the programme of spreading awareness about traffic rules. This is commendable," Bhat felt.
He said that in spite of what laws police department enforces, it cannot totally stop violations. Enforcement of rules only contributes to increase in the number of cases. If the people get education about the need to follow traffic rules, the problem gets automatically addressed, he stated. Noting that in foreign countries drivers follow traffic rules even on deserted roads during nights, he advised the citizens here to have the same mindset.
He said that in Bhuvaneshwar and Pun, smart poles have been erected under Smart City project, through which traffic violators get warned from control room. If they repeatedly violate rules, they get notice of fine at their homes. Smart city need not confine itself to building of roads and buildings. It should use digital technology in all the fields, he said.
Noting that traffic density in the town is increasing, he said that he will get a model for smart city procedures and implement it after discussing with superintendent of police.
Municipal councillor, Laxmi Majukola, Balakrishna Shetty Kakkunje, Rotary Club office bearers and police officials were present.
