Mangalore, Nov 20: Miscreants pelted stones at the grotto of St Antony Chapel located on the roadside bend at Bajpe Antonikatte, shattering its glass covering and inflicting minor damage to the lower portion of the statue of St Antony there. The incident is suspected to have occured after 12 am in the intervening night between November 19 and 20.
The chapel was shifted to its present location about a year ago, to pave way for the airport expansion. The neighbourers, who are following the practice of offering flowers to the grotto every morning, noticed the damage at around 6 am today. They immediately informed the church priest and assistant priest. Adyapady church vice president Michael D'Costa has filed a complaint in this regard, with the Bajpe police.
The policemen visited the spot and verified the damage. The took away the stones that had fallen nearby after inflicting the damage. Priest Fr Mathias Pereira and assistant priest Anil D'Silva were present during the police inspection. The police claim, that they have been patrolling the area at night but did not notice anything suspicious at night. The chapel has not been provided with any police protection.
