Congress chief Rahul Gandhi booked for making 'false' claims on Veer Savarkar

Mumbai, Nov 15 (Zee News): Hindutva icon and freedom fighter Veer Savarkar's family is reportedly offended with Congress chief Rahul Gandhi's statement that the former had pleaded to the Britishers to be freed from jail and apologised for his activities.

Ranjeet Savarkar, the grand nephew of Veer Savarkar, has filed a police complaint against the Congress president for allegedly making a "false statement" about the iconic Hindutva leader, who is revered by the ruling BJP.

''Rahul Gandhi, while addressing an election rally, had alleged that Veer Savarkar had apologised to the Britishers to be released from jail. It's false. Savarkar ji was jailed for 27 years by the Britishers. I've filed a complaint against him for defaming Savarkar ji,'' Ranjeet Savarkar told ANI.

The complaint against Rahul Gandhi was filed at Mumbai's Shivaji Park police station.

In his complaint, Ranjeet mentioned that Rahul Gandhi's statement that Vinayak Damodar Savarkar - better known as Veer Savarkar - had apologised to the Britishers and pleaded to them in writing to be freed from jail.

Veer Savarkar is widely believed to have popularised the term "Hindutva".

Hitting out at the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre, Congress president Rahul Gandhi had on Saturday alleged that women in the country were now scared of coming out fearing attacks.

Rahul Gandhi also alleged that freedom fighter Veer Savarkar, who is worshipped by the BJP party as an icon of patriotism, wrote a letter to the British Government to release him when leaders like Mahatma Gandhi were in prison.

Attacking Veer Savarkar, the Gandhi scion said "Prime Minister Narendra Modi kept the portrait of Veer Savarkar in Parliament...When Britishers were ruling this country, when all the Congress leaders were in prison, Veer Savarkar wrote a letter to the British. He was not 'veer' (gallant)."

The Congress president further alleged that Savarkar wrote that he would do anything for them (British), according to PTI.

"I apologise you. I will not indulge in any political activities. Release me from the prison. With folded hands, I will touch your (British) feet. Please release me from the prison. On the other hand, Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Ambedkar and Sardar Patel were fighting for the freedom of the country," Rahul Gandhi said.

He said there were currently two ideologies in the country.

    Savarkar was in jail for 27 years? What a joke! He was in jail from 1911-1924 and thereafter spent his life serving the British and when British left India, he went on receiving pension from them till he died. And the paradox is that this coward named himself Veer.
    He indeed wrote clemency letters to British till he was finally released. He applied to the Bombay Government for certain concessions in connection with his sentences. However, by Government letter No. 2022, dated 4 April 1911, his Application was rejected. He was later sent to jail in Andaman in July 1911.
    Merely a month after arriving in the Cellular Jail, Andaman, he submitted mercy petition on August 30, 1911. This petition was rejected on September 3, 1911. Asking for forgiveness, he described himself as a "prodigal son" longing to return to the "parental doors of the government". He wrote that his release from the jail will recast the faith of many Indians in the British rule. Also he said "Moreover, my conversion to the constitutional line would bring back all those misled young men in India and abroad who were once looking up to me as their guide. I am ready to serve the government in any capacity they like, for as my conversion is conscientious so I hope my future conduct would be. By keeping me in jail, nothing can be got in comparison to what would be otherwise."
    Savarkar submitted his next mercy petition on November 14, 1913, and presented it personally to the Home Member of the Governor General’s council, Sir Reginald Craddock. That too was rejected. In 1917, Savarkar submitted another mercy petition, after which he submitted his fourth mercy petition to the British Government on March 30, 1920. Even after getting released in 1924, he demanded an amount of Rs 100 per month. The British Government agreed on a stipend of Rs 60 per month in lieu of his compulsory unemployment. Such is the history of this man and such has been his 'faithfulness' to British.

    Veer Savarker was released in 1921 after several mercy petitions to the Britishers.

    He became a forceful orator and writer, advocating Hindu political and social unity. Serving as the president of the Hindu Mahasabha.

    He endorsed the idea of India as a Hindu Rashtra and opposed the Quit India struggle in 1942.

    He became a fierce critic of the Indian National Congress and its acceptance of India's partition

    He was accused of the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi but acquitted by the court. His role in the assassination was later established by Kapur Commission in 1969.

    Funny to see the news article describing Savarkar as freedom fighter. Don't know for which freedom he fought.

    The guy who begged for clemency and mercy from the British when leaders like Gandhi, Nehru, Patel and thousands of congressmen were rotting in jail being called a freedom fighter is hilarious.

    It is an insult to the martyrs and the leaders who gave up their lives, family life, jobs and health for the freedom of our country.

    Why Modiji got his military history wrong in the speech he gave in Karnataka? read about it May 14, 2018, in rediff, 'If only Cariappa/Thimayya/Chaudhari/Manekshaw were given a free hand. PM can commit blunders and boast about it. If Rahul does it, he should be booked? Book both, Rahul and Modi.
