Goa assembly heading for dissolution: Michael Lobo

Panaji, Nov 4(TNN): After a silence of more than two weeks on the political situation, deputy speaker of Goa assembly and Calangute MLA Michael Lobo on Friday said the political situation is fluid in the state and that the state was heading for dissolution of assembly.

“There is complete unrest in Goan society, especially among politicians, about the state of affairs in the Goa government. Nobody knows what is going to happen, which MLA will leave and join another party. Under such circumstances, I feel the assembly will be dissolved soon,” he said when queried on the sidelines of a function in Candolim on Friday.

“We politicians are taking the people for granted. There will be a major change soon,” he said adding that fresh round of election to the state assembly is imminent.

He also slammed Congress legislators for “jumping into the BJP”. Last month, two Congress MLAs — Subhash Shirodkar from Shiroda constituency and Dayanand Sopte (Mandrem) — joined the saffron party reducing the strength of the opposition Congress to 14.

It no longer is the single largest party in the assembly. “In a democracy, there is a ruling side and an opposition. It is the duty of the opposition to highlight the issues of people. When people vote for a person of a certain party, they expect the MLA to stay in that party and not join another party, because that does not benefit the people. It only benefits the MLA,” he said.

Three weeks ago, Lobo, while speaking at a meeting of mining dependents at Azad Maidan, Panaji, had lambasted his own party for not doing enough to restart mining. He had also said the administration was not working and that recruitment in the government had not taken place due to the illhealth of the chief minister Manohar Parrikar who was then being treated at AIIMS, Delhi. Three days later, Parrikar called Lobo to AIIMS for a meeting, following which Lobo said he was promised by the chief minister that the process to start filling of vacancies in government departments will be initiated within two weeks.

There is complete unrest, especially among politicians, about the state of affairs of the Goa government. Nobody knows what is going to happen, which MLA will leave and join another party.
