Madikeri, Nov 4: “The coalition government has decided to celebrate Tipu Jayanti celebrations started by Siddaramaiah government,” said Women and Child Development minister Dr Jayamala on Saturday, November 4.
The department of Kannada and Culture have held discussions following directions from the government regarding the celebrations. The meeting was called on directions from the chief minister,” clarified minister Jayamala.

Minister Jayamala speaking after the meeting said that there are photographs of BJP state president B S Yeddyurappa and MP Shobha Karandlaje celebrating Tipu Jayanti. “Why do they object regarding the celebrations now? A rule has been passed in the government about it. Therefore, the celebrations will be held. Nobody can stop them. Legal action will be taken against forces opposing the celebration. Protection of people is their duty also. They will be held responsible for untoward incidents,” she said.
Minister Zameer Ahmed took part in the meeting with minister Dr Jaymala.
‘Anti-Kannada Tipu’
MLA C T Ravi reacting to the developments said that Tipu was against Kannada. “Therefore, we object to the celebrations. Celebrate the birth anniversary of Saint Shishunala Sharif instead,” he suggested.
Head of Sri Rama Sene, Pramod Mutalik said, “There was a death last time due to arrogance of the government. Therefore, let them celebrate the birth anniversary of Sir Mirza Ismael who was Mysuru diwan. We will support it. Let there be no propaganda of history. There will be protests in the city on November 5 against the celebrations,” he said.
Tipu Jayanthi Virdohi Horata Samithi district convener Abhimanyu Kumar speaking in a news conference in Madikeri has urged the chief minister not to celebrate Tipu Jayanti. “Kumaraswamy had asked once in the past if Congress needed Tipu Jayanti that was responsible for unrest in the state. He had also said that Tipu Jayanti will not be celebrated if his government comes to power. Now that he has become the chief minister, let him ban the celebrations,” he said.
