Udupi: Pejawar Swamiji holds SC wrong in meddling with religious traditions

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Nov 2: "The power to modify religious traditions is not vested with Supreme Court (SC). At the same time, the government cannot take decisions relating to religions. The task of making changes in traditions is best left to the religious leaders and devotees," felt Sri Vishweshateertha Swamiji of Pejawar Math.

He was speaking after taking part at a programme to offer special puja to Lord Ayyappa on Thursday November 1 at MGM College ground here. The programme was held under the leadership of Shashikumar Varma, a descendant of Pandala lineage of kings and chairman of Pandala Palace Trust from Kerala under the aegis of Dharma Trust.

"Sabarimala is a central point of Hindu unity. This pilgrimage centre also gets credit for properly enforcing religious discipline. But orders passed by the SC on the issue of allowing entry for women into Lord Ayyappa shrine has created a sense of apprehension among the Hindus. Therefore, this verdict should be reviewed," he urged.

The Swamiji insisted that change in tradition should be brought about only if there is widespread support for the move by Hindu society. "Opinion of devotees and women is final. Hindu religion has never insulted women," he explained.

He said that Kerala government has been committing atrocities on the believers and showing autocratic behaviour. "I am always in favour of making changes in traditions. I was the first to change traditions as far as treatment of Dalits is concerned. I will oppose if the judgment is against construction of temple for Lord Ram. In this issue too, the final decision should be left to religious scholars and devotees. Change should be made only if Hindus are agreeable," he opined.

Before the programme, a procession accompanied by troupes singing devotional songs hailing Lord Ayyappa was taken from Big Bazar to MGM ground.

Ramachandra Swamiji of Uttara Kashi Kapilashram, cine actor, K Shivaram, member of Pandala lineage of kings, Meera Shashikumar Varma, Kuntaru Raveesh Tantry, religious leader, Balakrishna Hegde Karkala, Hariyappa Kotian, Baikady Suprasad Shetty, Bhojaraj R Kidiyoor, Balakrishna Ameen, Uday Shetty Karkala, Kaup Gopal Poojary, Babu Shetty, Raju Guruswamy Byndoor and others were present.

Girish, president of Ayyappa Seva Samaj, welcomed.

If Supreme Court wrong in meddling with religious traditions according to Swamiji why is he silent when the political party like BJP is celebrating its verdict and Prime Minister Modi said: "that after years of suffering women from Muslim community have finally found a way out".

    1. Swamiji should make his stand clear that " He opposes or favor the Hindu menstruating age women to Sabarimala temple"?
    2. There are 6 crores Hindu widows in the Hindu community alone. The condition of Hindu women is more dire than Muslims who number few comparing to the population of India. Why the similar bill like 'Triple Talaq' can safeguard the interest of Hindu women suffer in the lot due to the social outcast?

Any meddling of Supreme Court decision is 'contempt of the court'. This Asth Mutt Swamiji is more interest in politics and untouchable rituals than the social upliftment of the Hindu society.

I would request the Supreme Court to appoint the temple priest like Kerala model with 'Dalit' for Udupi, in order prevent the religious exploitation for political gain.

If not courts, whom devotees have to approach when discrimination is practiced in temples or mutts...when money offered by devotees/donated by philanthropists is eaten up or diverted by temple authorities....

SC is short-chanbging religious communities of their fundamental freedom by diluting this fundamental right enshrined in the Constitution. The next bastion it will look at will be the prohibition of women priests in the Catholic religion, challenging the authority of His Holiness the Pope himself. In doing so, it will note that Other Christian denominations already admit the ordination of priests.
There should be a limit to the SC powers. It is perhaps a fit case to introduce a constitutional amendment to allow Parliament to override an SC judgement by inserting a NOTWITHSTANDING CLAUSE in the Constitution on the same lines as Canada has done in its Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Of course, with adequate safeguards, e.g. a two-thirds majority in both Houses of Parliament.

I have an unpopular opinion about the whole subject.
    1. Yes SC is right to address an issue brought to its attention and as any Indian would expect, the petitioners would also expect justice from the SC purely based on the rights afforded by Constitution of India.
    2. Hindu women and most Indian women are aware and sensitive about not visiting holy places during special days in a month. A temple can put onus of maintaining piety on the women rather than place outright ban of their entry although older women are allowed and making the special days of the month central to their argument for outright ban.
    3. Last but not least, why do devotees visit temples? For prayer, meditation and the peace of mind along with sense of fulfillment that they derive from visiting the temple. Temples should focus on these aspects, rather than focus on being exclusive. Following the tenants of a religion is as much important to followers as much as it is for temple administration and people thereof.

Let our religious places be place of going peace for all irrespective of religion, caste and age. Swamys questioning SC is very unfortunate. SC is the only hope in india

The swamiji fasted & protested when the udipi thermal power plant was under construction when lanco was the owner. But once it is taken over by adani kept quiet.

When govt & supreme Court made triple talaq illegal, there was no protest. When govt banned devadasi system in blgaum, bettale seve in shimoga no protest. When the south kanara ksmbala banned no protest.

When women are fighting for their right to enter temple protest is there because tradition.

I agree Ram temple to be built, but why not wait for supreme Court judgement than making protest.

Please protest for Ills in the society drugs, liquor, dowry deaths, harassment to women & men. Right wages for the working class. People working still under bondage etc. We don't know where we go when we die if theists or atheists. Bring changes in society which are necessary for society &then fight for tradition.

Many people comment about Religion politics bla bla without any knowledge of what the case is all about
Shabarimala temple was under princely state of Travancore (Kerala)ruled by Vermas
During India s independence an agreement of accession to Union of India was signed between Kerala and Govt of India
In 1947 itself Shabarimala was getting about RS 50 lakhs equivalent money every year and this was one of the condition of agreement
    Same tradition is continuing now
Here Govt cannot have control over the day to day affairs of temple
Govt has to just give funds every year
Now what has happened is Govt is getting huge funds from.Shabarimala ( in Crores ) But money given is small
Any way just because govt is giving money Noether govt or Courts cannot change the traditions of Temple
Temple belongs to Hindus and Other religion people passing negative comments is like salting the wound

Dr Kamat, why other religions followers salting the wounds? Who’s sitting in SC? Does SC belongs to Pakistan? For yours mistakes don’t blame other religion. Why can’t you question feku government for indulging in cheap politics.
Let the centuries old traditions continue in Sabarimala who’s going to stop it. Only godi media sensatiolising it for vote bank politics.
I wish all electronic and Media ban for a week and see the changes in public behaviour. I don’t know you are a physician or Phd but senses like intellectual you will understand better than Andhbhakts.

Then why SC and central government indulging in the matters of Muslim shariah? So every religion matters should handled by respective religious heads not by elected goons.
Even babri masjid issue could have been solved by Ayodhya residents as a stake holders , politics only contributed bloodshed, corruption and loss of property.

These swamijis first save the sanatana dharma from their own shortsightedness.

I have following suggestions for our swamijis to consider before belting out long bhashans

    - Remove untouchability, declare that openly, and we yet decry racism when we travel aboard
-Stop madesthana, a blot on our country and on our culture due to a small segment of our dharma
-Remove pankti beda in your mata and embace all humans as equal and treat them accordingly
-Deities are not dualistic in their thinking like lowly humans, who divide people based on varna
-Women are equal to men, they are our mothers, daughters, wives, sisters, grand mothers, teachers
-branhminical hegemony is a dying tradition, however there are less educated and ignorant that still hold on to it
-The whole world is watching us on these stupidity/dombarta, please evolve and respect all
-Swamigis first you people set right examples of living, control your lust, passion, anger and raise above these poisons and set right example- Asaram bapu, nityananda, and some of our own swamis in coastal region do not reflect the principles of yetism/sadhism,
-God lives in the heart of every beating heart of all sentient and insentient beings, so worship him there.

-stop politicking spirituality and lets draw lakhsmana Rekha between politics, religion
    -
