Mangaluru Nov 1: State Bank is one of the prime locations in Mangaluru with several street vendors running their business. However, the illegal encroachment has put the pedestrians to worry, who are forced to step on streets amidst heavy traffic.

On Sundays, street vendors from other districts come to State Bank and put up stalls of selling old clothes at low prices and also other items. These street vendors have acquired the entire footpath attached to Town Hall, opposite Lady Goschen hospital.

This stretch at Town Hall is also meant for parking. By putting these cloth stalls, the vendors encroach footpaths as well as parking places which can accommodate large number of vehicles. This has led to pedestrians being denied access to use the footpath.

MCC had given tender to a company to charge and maintain parking places near Town Hall. On Sundays, instead of providing parking for vehicles, vendors acquire these footpaths by paying Rs 150 to Rs 300 per day.

Usually, Sundays do have the highest footfall near State Bank. If these street vendors acquire these parking places, people who come for shopping or outing need to search for parking places in and around Town Hall.

The nuisance does not end here. There are many who approach these street vendors to buy items, and they stop their vehicles on the road which leads to traffic congestion.
Street vending zone still vacant

On the other hand, the zone meant for street vendors which was opened nearly one and half years back still remains empty. Instead of acquiring footpaths and parking places, the vendors can easily do business in the zone meant for them.

When asked to comment on the issue, Mayor Bhaskar Moily said that the street vendors do not have permission to run the business on the footpath and he is not aware of money being collected from those street vendors.

When daijiworld spoke with money collector for parking near town hall, he said," MCC has given the tender so we are collecting money for parking. I am collecting the money on one side and other side of the Town Hall opposite Lady Goschen hospital, one more person is collecting the money. I am not taking any money from the street vendors of for Sunday Bazaar,”

But when daijiworld spoke with a street vendor, who is from Mysuru, he said, “We run this business every Sunday from morning to evening. This place is reserved for parking, but we pay Rs 150 to Rs 300 to those who collect money for parking places and Rs 20 to MCC cleaners.”

As per the tender, the company is not supposed to take any money from the street vendors and allow them to run their business in the parking places. Even the street vendors need to take permission from MCC, but they have not taken any permission from MCC to do business.

Footpaths are formed spending lakhs of rupees for the convenience of the pedestrians. But because of these stree vendors pedestrians have to walk on roads risking their lives as nowadays traffic is on increase side. the District Admn. and the Corporation authorities should take action to evacuate these street vendors and ask them to occupy the street vending zone. Due to this the public have deprived of parking their vehicles on roadside. This mess should be sorted out early.

This is a huge menace in Mangalore, there are auto rickshaw's parked on footpath, cars also use the footpath so many shops keep their merchandise on the footpath our police should be strict not only traumatising the two wheeler riders for riding without helmet. But when unauthorized people use the footpath the pedestrians have to put themselves in danger. There are times when flower vendors use the footpath to sell the flowers most of them outsiders. Builders also use the footpath obstructing the pedestrians from using the footpath. MCC should also build specific type of footpath across the city of Mangalore.

There was a time when any roadside vendor used to be evacuated instantly. Now slowly Mangalore is turning into Bangalore type of kachra city with unauthorised vendors and slowly unauthorised hoardings as well.

Demolish central market n build a new one, traders will cooperate n do theneedful.
Talking about parking space, here small stalls own them.
Feel like finding an exit, before benting your car.
MCC should work for the development, include central market n.smart city pitol project.
Clean n tidy surrounding- Fish, Chicken n Meat installed and maintained well as Malls do so within their space.

Like Delhi ,UP , and other north Indian states including Karwar, MCC must authorise them to do business on Sundays like SUNDAY BAZAR. Rest of the days not allow them to do business on the roads. Ristrict the traffic on Sundays.

After providing alternate space for doing buisness,it is corruptive practice of the parking contractor and blind eye of MCC..The street vendors may be evicted for smooth movement of traffic and pedestrians.

"The greatest evils and the worst of crimes is poverty; our first duty, a duty to which every other consideration should be sacrificed, is not to be poor." "If a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich."
why u people always behind the poor and weak ......
There are many places in this world where the locals come and sell their products (items)on street for their living ....
I prefer to buy veggies and fruits from this vendors as they cost less and give more quantity then this so called malls who cheat and loot in billing and pay extra more for carry bags

@Suhail mangalore, you may like to buy the vegetables from these vendoors, that makes them to spread their whole veg.on footpath.that makes others to walk difficult for others. There must be a system and ways to do ones marketing so that others dont feel disturbed.others too want to do their business so in whole instead of progress it is chaos.MCC should put up a plan for parkers, vendoors, walkers too.why dont they make abig multistoryed bulding to provide for everyone their veg, fish meat and underneeth only for parking ,for cars and rickshaws.?so that people can walk without fearing they may come under the vehicles.so you get place to walk, without disturbance of vendoors. Here it looks like MCC doesnt know what is going on in mangalore.Everyone collects money do they too really recieve everything?.Should we call this smart city or shaby city?

That's not only street vendors even some vehicles parking on the footpaths are forcing pedestrians to walk on the road.
All have the right to live. that does not mean do business on any place. That does not mean park vehicle at any place.
    Authorities must start penalizing them.
