Bangalore, Nov 13: People were bewildered, after the veterinary experts from the Institute of Animal Health and Veterinary Biologicals confirmed that cyanide traces were foud in the mortal remains of elephants found at Kappusoge near Nanjangud recently. Till the report came out, officials had been trying to dub the incident of death of the four elephants as a case of electrocution.
Director of the Institute Dr Renuka Prasad said, that the said report about finding of cyanide traces in the viscera of the animals, would be submitted to the government. He however, stressed that cyanide was found in the bodies of three out of the four dead elephants and that only the samples collected during the post mortem were subjected to the tests,. "We do not wish to speculate on what happened before the death of these animals," he added.
Experts say, that the chemicals found in the bodies of the elephants are normally used by gold and silver smiths. This chemical comes in handy for preparing the metals before making intricate carvings, it is learnt. As cyanide is very strong, it is not being used for agricultural activities.
