Washington, Nov 5: "The road ahead will be long and the climb will be steep, but we will get there. I promise you that we as a people will get there," US president-elect Barack Obama told a huge crowd that had gathered in Chicago's Grant Park to celebrate his victory late on Tuesday.

The Democratic candidate, who was declared elected as the 44th president of the United States roughly an hour earlier by US television networks, appeared before the gathering and the country with his wife Michelle and daughters Natasha and Malia, soaking in the elation of the moment.

Obama, who made history as the first black person to be elected to the highest office in the United States, said "change has come to America", a new dawn that re-established the country's credentials as the world's leading nation and reiterated its founding principles. But he also cautioned the country that "this is not the change, this is the chance to make the change".

Obama told the gathering that he had received an "extraordinarily gracious call" from his defeated Republican rival, Senator John McCain. Gracious in victory, Obama said his rival had fought long and hard in the campaign as he had fought long and hard for his country. "We are better off for the service rendered to the country by this leader," he said, adding that he looked forward to working with him to "renew the promise of this nation".

Obama thanked the "rock of our family, the love of my life, the next first lady" Michelle Obama for her unstinting support and told his daughters that they "have earned the new puppy that is coming with us to the White House".

Obama also thanked his campaign manager and strategists, saying they had mounted "the best campaign ever in the history of the United States".

Obama said the victory, however, belonged to the people of the United States and pledged to remain open to the views of the people and keep listening to them.

    Barack Obama Elected US President

Washington, Nov 5: Democrat Barack Obama captured the White House on Tuesday after an extraordinary two-year campaign, defeating Republican John McCain to  make history as the first black to be elected US president.

Obama will be sworn in as the 44th US president on January 20, 2009, television networks said. He will face a crush of immediate challenges, from tackling an economic crisis to ending the war in Iraq and striking a compromise on overhauling the health care system.

McCain saw his hopes for victory evaporate with losses in a string of key battleground states led by Ohio, the state that narrowly clinched President George W. Bush's re-election in 2004, and Virginia, a state that had not backed a Democrat since 1964.

Obama led a Democratic electoral landslide that also expanded the party's majorities in both chambers of Congress and firmly repudiated eight years of Republican President George W. Bush's leadership.

The win by Obama, son of a black father from Kenya and white mother from Kansas, marked a milestone in U.S. history. It came 45 years after the height of the civil rights movement led by Martin Luther King.

In a campaign dominated at the end by a flood of bad news on the economy, Obama's leadership and proposals on how to handle the crisis tipped the race in his favor. Exit polls showed six of every 10 voters listed the economy as the top issue.

Tens of thousands of Obama supporters gathered in Chicago's Grant Park for an election night rally that had the air of a celebratory concert, cheering results that showed his victories in key states.

McCain, a 72-year-old Arizona senator and former Vietnam War prisoner, had hoped to become the oldest president to begin a first term in the White House and see his running mate Sarah Palin become the first female U.S. vice president.

Obama is a black by birth. A black man in the WHITE house !!. It is notable that during the whole election campaign not a single time white or black was an issue in United State. But in India, after election, whether Sonia can become or can’t become Prime Minister is a baseless issue. Lets shame on our own democracy and so called unity in diversity. We are not educated enough to think human of a human... we can think and make INDIA shining only by addressing real issues like poverty, pollution, health care and NOT stupied issues like Italian, ram temple, Hindu, bihari, religion, attacking christians, churches. etc

In the year 1977 Janata party occupied power of Federal Government (Central) of India after the emergency was imposed by Late Indira Gandhi. The Late Morarji Desai became Prime Minister and within 2-3 years they collapsed due to internal party struggle. There was some negotiations took place to handover power to the Late Jagjeeven Ram who wanted to become Prime Minister.

But Morarji Desai being a higher caste he didn’t handover power to him instead recommended for general elections. A Brahmin person was telling me that if Jagjeevan Ram becomes Prime Minister “Yenkulna Janivara Deppod Avo” (we have to remove wearing of thread) Hope and expect a Dalit who is educated to become Prime Minister of India.

We Indians have some unique weaknesses among the strenghts we possess. This weakness in parallelling ourselves with others without thinking that we are different and each nation is different. Some of the key values that are practiced in the world from non-violence and changing the norm through non-armed struggle and some of the best human rights practices flow from our nations ideologies.

Even Mr. Barak Hussein Obama is the great admirer and follower of Mahatma Gandhi's ideologies. India is a country of multiple ethinicity with a population over 1 billion, perhaps 4-5 times than US, yet our staunch and exemplary democarcy not only has survived but has paved the way as a role model to other nations.

The muti-party, multi-communal, multi-religious, multi-liguistic and multi-social democarcy is the greatest gift to all Indians to cherish. Yes, we have lots of things to overcome such as corruption, communalism for political reasons and so on and so forth. This can be only overcome by us Indians, to strive to make corrections and and re-corrections and not by running away or shying away or blaming our systems based on some outcomes somewhere. As Americans unite in their national pride, we Indians try to devide and disown our land and on our national issues and our expectations. America has achieved in its 234 years is no comparison as to what our nation has achieved after independence of 60 years is remarkable and noteworthy given the complexity of our nation and issues.

This day all nations of the world envy our democarcy and we, some of us, don't see the greatness we have. So Indians, cherish India and don't runaway from problems. Remember what our father of nation did- he wanted to change what he saw. He got the change and we are continuing this change to build the nation. Its the duty of every Indian first of all to ideentify themselves as Indians and not to feel shameful to be an Indian.

The victory of Mr.Barack Obama as the new President-elect of the United States of America is indeed a new chapter in the history of not only America but the entire world. The willingness and determination of the freedom loving nation has shown in reality that anything is possible in this world so long as we all can work together and make this world a better place. We are all human beings belonging to the same planet with a population that is nearing eight billion people who have the identical objective to exist and co-exist.

The election result in America should not in any way undermine the greatness of India. In fact, we as Indians should be proud that our democracy and our secularism is being watched and admired very closely by each and every American. Martin Luther King jr. was a strong disciple of Mahatma Gandhi, and both these leaders have paved the way for peace, stability and non-violence in so many parts of the world, including America.

Each country has their own weaknesses, and each weakness has their own background of history that is some times beyond our control. We cannot eradicate corruption in any country by merely condemning ourselves and down-rating all the greatness that we have achieved. India is the seventh largest Industriaal nation, and now even the fourth largest Economy of the world. India has been gifted with some of the best leaders, and that is why we have survived for more than 60 years as an independant and exemplary nation with a population that has increased by more than 800 million people since 1947.

We must therefore help our leaders and our country in a special way by dedicating ourselves for so many good causes in so many positive ways. We left India more than 50 years yet we have watched the progress and prosperity of mother India with a positive attitude. Our leaders need our continued support, understanding and our prayers too, so that they in turn will render the best possible selfless services to the nation that was given the freedom by the British after so much of peaceful and non-violent struggle.

Our faith, our hope and our patriotism towards India must continue at all levels and under all prevailing circumstances. India and Mr. Obama will have a great deal to work together and make many more things possible in the years to come.

Congratulations to Barrack Obama, first of all winning presidencial nomination from Democrat party, defeating most powerful former first lady Hilary clinton, and now winning Presidency, its really history making as he is first African American president. Where 40yrs ago blacks couldn't vote, they couldn't get educated, they were discriminated, and now we have black president, so the change is coming to America.

But Obama has a long and difficult journey ahead, he has to rebuild the trust of the world which has been lost because of George Bush, he has to rescue Americans from slowing economy, war in Iraq and several other problem, but i'm sure he will, and he can, it may take couple of years, but lets wait and see, Congrats Barrack Obama, wish you every success in your difficult journey in rebuilding USA in economy and forgein Policy. An historic win with an astounding margin. I congratulate all the American people for ing a right candidate to lead their nation. The entire world was waiting for this moment. This win has already brought cheers to the markets. Obama has brought in a ray of hope for the sinking , devastated financial world. The entire world financial market is footed on the concept of “confidence” which in turn is depending on the health of America’s economy. I am bullish in my hope that the golden Clinton era comes back to America.

This is not only my wish, my prayer too. Another important issue I am eagerly looking forward is an end to the fake war on terror and return of normalcy in world peace. Now Obama has won but there is no time for him to party. The people of America has burdened him with onerous task of lifting America back from the scratches.

I whole heartedly salute the oldest democracy of the world for upholding the true spirit of democracy , see the beauty of the democracy – as soon as McCain smelled defeat, he rung up to Obama to wish him and pledge his support. This kind of gestures can be seen only in a democracy. Congratulations again to all Americans , especially Democrats and all other people who supported Obama worldwide.
