Mangalore, Oct 23: Street vendors eking out a living in the city have been resentful of the frequent raids conducted against them by the City Corporation officials under instructions from the city mayor.
Most the street vendors carrying on various trades on the footpaths in the city belong to minorities and backward classes. Mayor Ganesh Hosabettu has been triggering frequent raids on the footpath traders, complained the assistant secretary of Minorities and Backward Class Street Vendors' Union Riyaz Harekal.
The mayor, who visits the central market frequently to express his support to the fish vendors, is targeting the street vendors who are carrying on their trade nearby the market since long, which needs to be condemned, he said.
The mayor should act in a manner that befits the people's representative of the City Corporation, keeping in mind the welfare of all classes of people, he stated in the release.
