Mysuru, Aug 20(DC): With picturesque Kodagu in south Karnataka battling the worst floods in recent times following incessant rains, the Centre rushed in to help with President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi speaking over phone with Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, who is camping in the rain-battered district, to enquire about the situation.

Mr Modi has assured all required assistance to the state to face the situation, the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said. "Extended all possible support in the rescue and relief operations. I pray for the safety and well-being of those in the flood affected areas," the PM tweeted. Mr Kumaraswamy informed President Kovind that the district administration was managing the rescue-and-relief work efficiently, along with the Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other agencies, and has rescued more than 3,500 people so far.

The CM undertook an aerial survey of the affected areas for the second day on Sunday. Speaking to reporters, he said the state government is taking urgent steps to make sure relief material especially food, reaches everyone even in the remotest places. Remarking that Kodagu was facing a difficult time, he said the government wants to free people from fear and anxiety by rescuing them first. BJP State President B.S. Yeddyurappa too visited Kodagu and assured required assistance from the party-led central government.
