Mangalore, Oct 16: Kinnigoly bus stand perhaps, can vie for the title of being the worst bus stand in the district, if the frequent discussions about it, generated in the gram panchayat meetings and the public circles are considered as pointers. The bus stand of late, has also been trying to get the dubious distinction of being the 'killer' bus stand, as two lives were lost recently and one person was critically injured.
On September 2 this year, medical student Dr Harish Hegde from Sankalakaria died here. On October 14, hotellier Umesh Poojary was crushed under the tyres of a bus, while his relative Susheela who was critically injured, is fighting for her life in a hospital.
On Wednesday October 15, the people staged a silent protest at the bus stand, by blocking the movement of buses for ten minutes. Those gathered at the bus stand submitted a memorandum to the gram panchayat president, recommending for the demolition of the tin-sheet bus stand and for erecting an orderly bus stand within a week at the spot.
Bhuvanabhirama Udupa of 'Yugapurusha', taluk panchayat members Namdev Kamat, Vinod Bollur, Eshwar Kateel, Keshav and about 300 people went on a peaceful procession, before handing over the above memorandum.
People resented the inaction of the auto and taxi drivers in trying to save the accident victims immediately after the accident. Mulki police station-in-charge Sudarshan promised to regulate bus parking in the bus stand.
Panchayat president Umavati and secretary promised to convene emergency session of the panchayat and take positive steps in this regard.
