Mumbai, Oct 13: “Divisive forces are working on dividing the country on the basis of religion and politics while cultural sphere is constantly striving in providing dreams to people. The Kannada movement had begun in Mumbai and Chennai during 1930. It is a great news to know that it is still very much active. We should be proud of this and should also be grateful to all those have strived hard to keep Kannada alive in Mumbai. Kannada organizations in the metro are indeed doing their yeomen service to preserve the distinct Kannada culture. The need of the hour is to be humane, said veteran litterateur and critic Dr Baragur Ramachandrappa, here on Sunday October 12 evening.
He was speaking at the inaugural of platinum jubilee celebrations of Karnataka Sangha here on Sunday evening at Dr Vishweshwarayya auditorium of Karnataka Sangha located at Matunga (West). Dr Bargur inaugurated the celebrations by lighting the lamp.
The programme was presided over by Sangha president Manohar M Kori. Vishweshwar Bhat, editor of leading Kannada daily Vijaya Karnataka, Manu Baligar, director of Karnataka directorate of Kannada and culture, Kannada film actress and Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce president Dr Jayamala were the chief guests of the occasion.
Mogaveer Sangha president Ajith Suvarna, eminent writer Dr Sunitha M Shetty, Bunts Association president Aikala Harish Shetty, Mysore Association of metro president Venkatesh I Ramachandra, BSKB Association president Dr Suresh S Rao, Billava Association president Jaya C Suvarna, former president of the Sangha K Jayaram Alva were present at the dais.
Speaking on the occasion Vishweshwar Bhat said that Kannada faces the threat of globalization more than ever before. "We have become victims of globalization that has distorted our culture and daily living. Kannadigas should become aware of gradual degeneration of our ancient language and culture," he urged.
The heads of various divisions of Association and office-bearers were present on the occasion.
Association honourary treasurer B G Nayak welcomed the gathering while joint secretary Srinivas Jokatte proposed vote of thanks. Vice-president Bharat Kumar Polipu compered the programme.
Various cultural programmes which were held during the latter part of the programme entertained the audience to the maximum.
