Beletangady, Aug 7: In an incident which came to light on Sunday August 5, a woman had committed suicide three days back at Perady within Venur police station limits. It is learnt that the woman was shocked to learn that minor daughter, who was till recently in the ninth standard, had been raped and she is in the sixth month of her pregnancy.
The woman who committed suicide by consuming poison has been identified as Leela (40). The accused who is said to have raped the girl, Sathish alias Shashi (21) from Olpady in Kshipatna village stands arrested.
The girl in question was a ninth standard student, but had stopped attending school. She had, sometime back, visited the home of her grandmother at Kashipatna. During this visit, Sathish, who was known to the family, developed friendship with her and continued to have contact with her over phone even after she went back. During January, he had led the girl to a secluded spot where she was raped. But the girl had not revealed about this incident to anyone
Sometime back, Leela had taken her daughter to the government hospital at Shirtady for health checkup. There, she got the shock of her life after she came to know that her daughter was pregnant. Leela, overwhelmed by this information, ended her life three days back. A report about her death had been registered in Venur police station. When Leela ended her life, her husband was very ill and hospitalized. Now he has been discharged from the hospital, but it is said that he has been kept in the dark about his daughter's pregnancy.
When relatives and police questioned the girl about her pregnancy, she revealed about the developments leading to her condition. Thereafter, a complaint was lodged in Venur police station on the basis of which the youth stands booked under the provisions of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. The girl was put through medical examination.
In the meanwhile, some visual media channels carried the news, claiming that the father had raped the girl. This false news gave rise to lot of anger among the locals.
