Bengaluru, Aug 6: Carmel Convent Girls High School and Sophia’s High School were the winners of the 14th annual Scripture Quiz 2018 conducted by Serra Club here, for the students of SSLC and ICSE groups of the archdiocese in the city.
While Liza Naomi, Vandana Catherine and Divya Susheela of Carmel Convent Girls High School bagged the first prize in the SSLC group, Rakshita Aparna, Christal Biju and Rowena Joseph of Sophia’s High School won the first prize in ICSE group.
The Serra Club of Bengaluru comprising of a group of lay Catholics promote, foster and encourage vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life.
This year’s theme for the quiz was ‘Evangelization’ and focused on the Gospel according to St Mark and on St Paul’s letters 1 and 2 to the Corinthians and the annual scripture quiz was co-sponsored by the Catholic Club of Bengaluru.
A total number of 65 teams from English medium Catholic schools participated in the elimination written round.
Archbishop of Bengaluru Dr Peter Machado met with and thrilled the children with his warmth.
In his address, the archbishop highlighted the importance of studying the Bible and explained that the Bible is not only a book of prayer but also inspiration for living life.
He said those who do not read the Bible do not experience a real, fulfilling life and quoted some examples, which helped to motivate the children.
Serran Carrol Beck compered and Bobin John conducted the quiz.
Catholic Club president Raphael Johnson presented prizes and rolling Trophies to the winners.
The programme included an introduction to the Serra movement worldwide and a testimony by Fr Charles Vijay, a redemptorist priest, who stressed that being a priest or a religious is not just a career choice, but it was possible to serve society and spread the message of Christ by being a priest or a religious sister.
Religious persons can also be a doctor, lawyer, engineer or even a film director like him, he said.
A second testimony was from Sr Margarita Diaz from St Charles Borromeo Convent, Lingarajapuram, who spoke about hearing to a teacher's advice to choose a career that will help one make the world a better place that helped her to be a religious sister.
