Mangaluru, Aug 5: A scooter rider was killed after a Mahindra Scorpio vehicle hit him near Pavanje, Haleangady, on national highway 66 in the early hours of Saturday August 4. The deceased was Raveendra Poojary (44), resident of Kolnad near Mulky.

Raveendra was working as guard for National Institute of Technology (Karnataka), Suratkal. After his duty hours, he was going home at around 5 am when a Scorpio vehicle that was moving towards Mangaluru hit him. On account of the force of the accident, the scooter and its rider were thrown off, and they got stuck under the rear wheel of a truck that had been parked there on account of tyre puncture. The people shifted Poojary to hospital but on the way, he breathed his last, sources stated.

The killer Scorpio vehicle sped from the scene after hitting the scooter. The truck which was parked by the roadside at Pavanje was transporting wooden logs to Puttur from Brahmavar, but the tyre of the truck burst when the vehicle reached near Haleangady. The driver had got the tyre replaced and moved ahead a little but on reaching Pavanje, another tyre suffered puncture. The lorry therefore had to be parked by the roadside. It is said that the root cause for the accident was the stranded truck.

The lorry cleaner witnessed the accident. He told the police that on account of darkness, he could not note the registration number of the vehicle.

Raveendra Poojary is survived by wife and a daughter. A case about the accident was registered in the traffic police station at Suratkal.
