Belagavi: Bridge without protective wall accounts for a life

Belagavi, Aug 4: A student who was going to his school by a bicycle suddenly lost his balance when crossing a bridge-cum-barrage built over River Ghataprabha which does not have any protective railing or wall, and drowned in the river below. This unfortunate incident happened at Sunadholi near Moodalagi village in the district on Friday August 3 morning.

Basavaraj Bharamappa Subhani (14),native of Kappagaluddi village in Raibag taluk and currently living at Sunadholi, lost his life after falling into the river Ghataprabha below. It is said that when he was crossing the bridge, a passenger tempo which came from the opposite direction brushed against his bicycle. The boy lost his balance and directly fell into the river.

Although search operation was launched immediately, on account of excessive force of water, the divers could find the body about 500 metres away at 4 pm.

Basavaraj Subhani had grown up in the house of his grandmother, Gangavva Pashi, in Sunadholi. He had completed primary education at Kamaladinni and joined eighth standard this year at government high school at Sunadholi.

A case about this accident was registered in Moodlagi polie station. Moodlagi tahsildar, G S Malagi, pacifying the villagers who expressed anger at not providing protective railing to the bridge, explained that he has been informmed by the officials of minor irrigation department officials that protective wall was not built as it causes problem in case of floods. He said he would hold discussions with superiors and take appropriate action as necessary.
