Udupi: Kasturba Hospital Manipal and Mangaluru set up dedicated heart failure clinics

Udupi, Aug 1: Kasturba Hospital Manipal and Kasturba Hospital Mangaluru have started heart failure clinics. The clinic at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal was inaugurated by C G Muthana, chief operating officer– Teaching Hospitals of Manipal Health Enterprises Pvt Ltd. The heart failure clinic at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal would function on Monday to Wednesday from 2.30pm to 4.30 pm. Special subsidised screening package for the patients is available at the heart failure clinic. Simultaneously, Heart Transplantation Clinic was launched at KMC Hospital B R Ambedkar Circle, Mangaluru, and it would function on all Wednesdays from 1.30 pm to 4.30 pm.

Inaugurating the heart failure clinic, chief operating officer – Teaching Hospitals Manipal Health Enterprises C G Muthana said, “Heart failure occurs when the heart muscle is weak and cannot pump enough blood for oxygen supply. Though it is difficult to live in such condition, approaching heart failure clinic would enable patients to obtain proper guidance from experts and there by lead a better quality of life. The heart failure cClinics in developed countries are known to improve the treatment outcome among the patients. Heart failure clinic at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal would offer personalised care in a safe environment.”

 

Dr Avinash Shetty, medical superintendent said, “The heart failure clinic provides comprehensive care for patients with end stage heart failure, patients with left ventricular dysfunction or those with issues regarding the implanted cardiac assisted devices. Patients with heart failure caused by cytotoxic drugs would be attended to in the Clinic.”

According to Dr Tom Devasia, head of Interventional Cardiology, Kasturba Hospital Manipal, the patients who receive timely attention and care in the heart failure clinic would have the advantage of identifying the precise condition and thereby be able to lead a better quality of life for a longer duration. “Those patients who are eligible for cardiac transplantation would have better chance of availing heart transplantation as and when donor hearts are available.”
