Uproar in Goa Assembly over plastic eggs

Panaji, Jul 31 (IANS): The Goa Legislative Assembly on Tuesday witnessed an uproar after Congress MLA Aleixo Reginaldo alleged that eggs made of plastic were being sold in Goa and demanded a probe into their sale.

"I have brought three eggs to show you. These are plastic eggs which are being sold in Goa. This is harmful for the health of the people of the state," Reginaldo said during zero hour, while exhibiting the alleged plastic eggs for all to see on the floor of the House.

Reginaldo also said that he, as well as a former MLA had come across plastic eggs being sold in Goa, while claiming that the Food and Drugs Administration officials were slack in cracking down on the menace.

In response, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said that he would get the 'plastic' eggs checked in multiple laboratories, urging the opposition legislator not to indulge in speculation without scientific vetting.

"I will get it checked with all laboratories. We will send one to the Centre also. There cannot be a plastic egg," Parrikar said.

The Chief Minister, who is an Indian Institute of Technology-Mumbai alumnus, also said that he had a grounding in science and engineering and insisted that one cannot manufacture a plastic egg.

"I have done engineering and I am a student of science. I can tell you positively... It cannot be (made of plastic)... I can bet on it," Parrikar said.
