Moodbidri, Oct 8: In an incident that occurred in the late hours of Monday October 6, a woman from Mantrady in the outskirts of the town threw her two small children into a tank near her house before plunging into the tank and ending her life.
Charithrya (26), wife of agriculturist Dayanand Poojary, resident of Mantrady Manjottu House, her son Dhanush (5) and daughter Dhanya (2) lost their lives in the tragedy
The family owns large tracts of agricultural fields and plantation. After Charithrya came back after harvesting the standing paddy crops from their field in the evening, a heated argument followed with her mother-in-law over some dish she had prepared. It is said that Poojary's mother complained to him about the incident on his return at night. As a result, he is said to have abused his wife and slapped her. It is suspected that Charithrya, feeling humiliated and dejected at the turn of events, decided to commit suicide.
The relationship between the couple was reported to have gone sore, and arguments ensued between them frequently. Their marriage was six years old. After his wife left home at about 10 pm on Monday, Dayanand searched for her for some time in the neighbourhood after waiting for her return, and then concluded that she had gone to her parents' home at Panapila, about four kilometres away. In the morning on Tuesday, he got suspicious and pumped out the water of the tank, to find the bodies of his wife and children.
A case has been registered in this connection, by the Moodbidri police. Dayanand Poojary is already named as accused in the murder of Vishwanath Poojary, which followed a quarrel that broke loose during a 'Bhoota Kola' programme in Dayanand's house three years ago.
Assistant superintendent of police Chandragupta, sub-inspector Bharati, tahsildar Achuta P and others visited the spot.
