Udupi, Oct 6: Ex-chief minister of the state and chairman of the Central Administration Reforms Commission Dr M Veerappa Moily compared the support extended by various countries to the nucelar deal entered into by India, to the Indian independence.
Speaking at the model United Nations Organization session being held at Manipal Institute of Technology Manipal on Sunday October 5, Moily said, that the nucelar deal is not only highly important for the country, but also very relevant. "It will solve unemployment and power shortage problems. It will open up the floodgates of the country's development. Like the political independence the country achieved in 1947, this deal is an economic independence for us," he said.
"Economically, India is placed second in the world. Our country is the largest democracy in the world. After the Pokharan nuclear tests condudcted in the year 1994, various countries imposed ban on nuclear knowledge transfer to India. Western countries, which were determined not to transfer modern nuclear technology to India, have relented on the issue now. The government headed by Manmohan Singh has succeeded in convincing the world to lift the ban. When Rajiv Gandhi was the prime minister of the country, information technology revolution was achieved under the leadership of Sam Pitroda. In the coming days, nuclear deal will pave way for overall development of the country," Moily described.
As the country is facing severe shortage of power, the only alternative available, is to produce nuclear power, Moily said. India has 30% of thorium deposits, however we have not yet mastered the technology of processing this mineral into uranium as yet, Moily noted. Every nuclear unit will provide employlment to one lac people. So, the nucelar deal will mitigate the unemployment problem to a great extent, Moily predicted.
