Bellary, Oct 2: The citizens of Bellary launched “Souhardha Vedike”, a forum for social harmony at the historical Gandhi Statue, in the heart of the city, on the birth anniversary of the father of the nation, Oct. 2.
The newly started Forum launched under the leadership of the Bishop of Bellary, Henry D’Souza, intends to “promote a more vibrant civil society by upholding Human Rights and democratic ethos among all the citizens”.
“It is totally unacceptable for people to trample the Human Rights of fellow citizens and commit criminal acts such killing innocent people, desecration of holy places, and subjecting women and children to humiliation and indignity,” declared Bishop D’Souza in his inaugural address, decrying communal violence in India.
The Bishop urged all the political leaders “to rise above petty politics and protect the lives and properties of citizens whom they have vowed to serve”.
“Promotion of communal harmony and the national integration by fostering a culture of peace and harmony”, is the primary aim of the organization.
Other than fostering goodwill among the various sections of the society, the Forum intends to promote the protection of the environment and judicious use of the limited natural resources.
The Forum has also drawn up a plan to organize inter-religious meets, prayer meetings and celebration of national festivals to promote national integration.
I order to fight the menace of violence, terrorism and religious bigotry, the Forum has launched peace clubs 11 schools to “foster a culture of peace among students”. The representatives from such Peace Clubs from the city schools took an oath on the occasion to “shed all hatred and to foster peace in young minds.”
