Opposition demands probe after Goa roads submerge, develop potholes

Panaji, Jul 7 (IANS): The Congress on Friday demanded a probe into the road building works undertaken by Goa government agencies as torrential monsoon showers caused havoc in the state capital with major roads lying submerged for nearly 24 hours.

Congress spokesperson Yatish Naik demanded a Vigilance Department probe into how roads, which had undergone maintenance work barely a few days ago, had developed potholes with less than a month of monsoon showers.

"The arterial roads in the state's major cities including Panaji, are lined with potholes everywhere, despite maintenance works being carried out a short while back.

"The entire capital has been inundated with rainwater. We demand a high-level vigilance enquiry into the monies spent on these works by the Public Works Department and the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation," Naik said at a press conference.

"Accountability for the woes which Goans have to suffer on account of bad roads and submerged roads has to be fixed and department heads responsible for the public works should roll," he said.

The coastal state has been witnessing incessant rains over the last 48 hours, which has thrown lives of common people asunder, with major roads clogged and failing electricity in several parts of the state.

No loss of life has so far been reported due to the heavy rains.
