Puttur: Educationists Support Dress Code in Higher Education

Puttur, Sep 27: "The dress code of an educational institution represents the uniqueness of the institution and streamlines equality among all the students. The idea of introducing the concept of uniforms, which hitherto was confined only to lower levels, even at the college level, is a healthy development," opined St Philomena College correspondent Fr Jerald D'Souza.

He was speaking after taking part in the programme organized in connection with the implementation of the concept of uniforms for the first year degree students from this year onwards, at the St Philomena College on Friday September 26.

College principal Fr F X Gomes noted that even several top companies have streamlined uniform dress codes for their employees.

Vice president of the College Parents-Teachers Association Gurudath Pai supported the management's decision in introducing the concept of uniforms in the college.

Prof B G Suvarna welcomed. Vijay Kumar Moleyar proposed vote of thanks.

    Stopping people from wearing Bindi is definitely infringing on religious right of majority. Even in US, religious symbols such as Head dress are allowed to be worn. In fact it is this kind of intolerance that is causing the problems. Just because many Hindu girls don't wear Bindis does not mean that right should be suppressed.

    I see Larence's ploy here to say that who don't wear Bindi are modern and progressive. This is highly deplorable statement. Many Sikhs here do not wear Turbans but if there is any talk about banning turbans all will (rightly) protest including those who do not wear. Exercising right is an option under democarcy. But suppressing the right is not blant voilence against a community.

    The purpose of uniform is equality among students. We welcome the dress code system in educational institutions. Parents should keep in mind that it pertains to flowers and bangles also. Outside the school they can wear anything with flowers,matching bangles,bindi etc. I come across so many modern girls who do not wear bindi because they dress in jeans and tops. When they were small their parents made the issue big but now what happened? It is food for thought.

    It’s absolutely ridiculous to introduce uniform for college students. The school authorities are going the Taliban way!They are wrong.All the top management companies have relaxed dress code for their employees. I woudn't be surprized if the school's force students to wear white robes. Please don't destroy youthfulness of the young !

    Being the Ex Student of St Philomenas collecge I highly appreciate the decision taken by the principal and the vice president of the parents teachers association. Many poor students come to this college from the neighbouring village who can not afford clothes and fees.

    This uniform concept will drive away the feeling of inferiority complex. All students will look smart and the focus will be on studies and not on what to wear! Well thought dear Pincipal.
