Bangalore, Sep 25: Home minister Dr V S Acharya claimed on Wednesday September 24 that his department has in its possession, strong evidence about the involvement of opposition parties in the attacks on churches in the state.
Speaking to reporters after holding consultations with the central team deputed by the union home ministry here, he said that the state government has collected conclusive evidence about the connivance of the Congress and the JD (S) in these attacks. "The government will reveal details at an appropriate time," he declared.
"We have detailed information of what transpired in Kodagu district and Sagar in Shimoga district. We know who the conspirators were. However, the time is not ripe to reveal the details. We will make the information public at an opportune moment," Acharya said.
He charged the opposition parties of engineering the attacks on churches with the sole objective of destabilizing the state government led by the BJP. He said, as per the information with him, the attack on the Mariannapalya church here, was caused by the friction between two warring Christian groups, divided on linguistic lines, namely, Kannada and Malayalam. In the past too, these groups had clashed among themselves and minister Katta Subrahmanya Naidu had struck a compromise formula. But, some people attacked the church by entering it from the back door, he said.
The BJP government is projected in bad light, as if the attacks on churches began only after it took over charge. Such attacks had taken place even when S M Krishna, Dharam Singh and H D Kumaraswamy were the chief ministers. Lot of din is being kicked up now just because the BJP is in power, he said, expressing his displeasure over the developments.
