Puttur, Jun 21: Town police raided a hi-tech gambling den here on June 18 and arrested 49 people. Rs 96,493 used for gambling was seized along with 44 mobile phones and other documents.
According to police, the gambling den was functioning for sometime on the third floor of a commercial complex near Boluvaru, Puttur main road. The police who conducted the raid after receiving definite information exposed gambling in progress inside closed doors.
It is said that the den was being run in a separate room in the complex by those who also have a video game centre in Mangaluru. The female owner of the den was also found at the place during the raid.
It is said that reputed people in the town, the employed and entrepreneurs, are involved in the business. As the police entered, the female owner had heated exchange of words with them alleging that police have conducted the raid even after having a license. Police continued the operation till late night ignoring her and have arrested eight staff members and 41 people from the spot.
The operation was conducted by SI Nandini and staff, on guidance from town police inspector Sharan following directions from SP Dr Ravikanthe Gowda.
Police were informed by local people that the den was functioning there from sometime. Police had conducted a raid a week ago and warned the owner of the centre. Yet, the den with illegal gambling continued to function.
