Mangaluru, Jun 20: The sixth additional district and sessions court here, on Tuesday June 19, found that charges of befriending a college girl and forcibly raping her, levelled against a person from Koominadka in Bantwal taluk have been proved. The court, which found the accused to be guilty, reserved its orders on quantum of sentence.
Irshad (27) from Koominadka in Bantwal taluk has been found guilty of the charges framed against him.
A girl had added the name of her friend, an 18-year-old college student, to a WhatsApp group of which she herself was a member. A member of the group, who claimed her name to be Rafa, had expressed inclination to be a friend of the said girl. The student had opted out of the group sometime later, but messages between her and Rafa continued to be exchanged, although they had never met each other.
On the birthday of the student, Rafa extended best wishes and expressed wish to send a bouquet, through a relative of hers. When the girl went to B Ed college to collect transfer letter, a boy approached her, duly introducing himself as Rafa's relative, Irshad, and handing over a bouquet to her.
The girl then got admission into a college in the city and travelled to college daily from her native place. After sometime, she received a message from Rafa, inviting her to accompany her to Mangaluru as she was travelling by car that day. A car driven by Irshad approached the student who was waiting for Rafa. Irshad told the student that Rafa would be picked on the way. Once she boarded the car, Irshad reportedly threatened her, took her to Dharwad and raped her there, it was alleged.
The victim had thereafter filed a complaint in the town police station at Bantwal.
