Mangalore, Sep 19: Mangalore University inter-college table tennis tournament (TT) for men and women was held at Kinnigoli Pompeii College on Thursday September 18. Altogether 56 teams from different colleges under the Mangalore University participated in the tournament.
Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat president Sucharita Shetty inaugurated the tournament. In his inaugural address, he advised the students, to give importance to sports activities too, along with their studies and other activities. Sports events in the college bring students together, irrespective of the casts and creeds to which they belong, which in turn, helps to bring peace, harmony and brotherhood in the society, he felt. Sports activities also refresh our bodies and minds, he said and congratulated the organizers for holding such a big sports event at Kinnigoli. Fr Paul Pinto, correspondent of the college, Prof Patrick Menezes, principal, physical education director of the college James Oliver, old student of the college and prominent sportsperson Jossie Pinto were present on the occassion.
In the men's final of the TT tournament, St Aloysious College won the trophy, whereas in the women's final, Cauvery College, Virajpet won the title. In the women's section, Chaturangini of Besant College Mangalore won the best player award and Sridev of St Aloysious College bagged the best player award in men's section. Fr Paul Pinto, Nijalingappa, director of Mangalore university physical education department and Santhosh D'Souza, assistant direcor and Rajesh Kudva distributed the prizes.
Prof Patrick Menezes welcomed the guests and gathering. James Oliver proposed vote of thanks. Dr Radhakrishna Bhat Perla compered the programe.
