Udupi: Book review committee stresses on inclusion of Tulu in curriculum

Udupi, Jun 1: “Study material of Tulu as third language is the same what we talk and live in our daily life. As we write Tulu in Kannada script, it is easy for students to score full marks in the language. We all study national and international issues, but lack the knowledge about our own culture”, said Sheshashyana, DDPI, Udupi.

He was addressing the meeting of Tulu book review committee, held on Thursday, May 31 here. “It is easy to score maximum marks in Tulu as it is our mother tongue. I personally had taken interest to teach Tulu script in 9 schools of Bantwal,” he said.

Encouraging the headmasters to introduce Tulu as third language in their respective schools Chandrahas Rai, registrar of Tulu Academy said, “If the management appoints a teacher to teach Tulu, the academy will pay salaries to them. The academy will also provide training to Tulu teachers and also Rs 3,000 worth books to the school library. At present, Tulu is taught in high school level. We are trying to introduce Tulu language in PU, degree and post-graduation level.”

Tulu is being taught as a third language in 35 schools of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district currently. In Udupi, two of the schools have introduced Tulu in their curriculum and more are underway. Tulu students have recorded 100% result in SSLC last academic year. As many as 417 students had appeared for the exam in which 89 students have secured cent percent result.

Jayakar Shetty Indrali, president, Tulu Koota Udup, and Madhukar, nodal officer were present.

    Tulu can be offered as optional throughout KN state. If it is taught and used with KN script, lot of kannadigas will be interested to learn.
