Bengaluru, Jun 1: A delegation comprising Congress leaders from Dakshina Kannada district met chief minister, H D Kumaraswamy, on Thursday May 31 and requested to release special grant of Rs 20 crore to undertake relief work in respect of heavy damage suffered in Mangaluru and other regions on account of unexpected heavy rainfall.
The delegation included former minister, Abhay Chandra Jain, MLC, Ivan D'Souza and some other leaders. Addressing a press meet later, Khader said that within a few hours on June 29, Dakshina Kannada district received 300 mm rain, throwing normal life out of gear and inflicting heavy damage. "Two persons lost their lives, and we have provided compensation of five lac rupees each. Over 200 houses were damaged, and a compensation of Rs 1.10 lac in case of completely damaged houses and Rs 52,000 for partially damaged houses are being disbursed. We have undertaken steps to ensure that compensation amounts reach the beneficiaries within ten days," he explained.
Khader also stated that roads and bridges have also been damaged and that the leaders have sought grant of Rs 20 crore, adding that the chief minister had assured of positive response.
