Chikkamagaluru, May 30: A Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation bus deviated from its path and plunged into River Vedavathi near Kadur town on Tuesday May 29 morning, and got deposited upside down in the riverbed, 19 passengers suffered serious injuries. As the river does not have water, a catastrophe in the making was averted.
The bus in question was moving to Kundapur from Bengaluru. The accident happened when crossing River Vedavathi in the outskirts of Kadur which is located just before entering the town.
Driver of the bus, Govinda, said that he heard the sound of an iron rod snapping with a huge sound, immediately after which the steering wheel went out of his hands and the bus jumped down before he could realize what was happening.
The bus had left Bengaluru at 6.30 am and reached near Kadur at 10.45 am. After the bus jumped 30 feet down the bridge, firemen and police got busy with relief and rescue operation. They admitted the injured into hospital. As diesel tank had ruptured and the fuel was oozing out, fire brigade personnel continuously poured water on it to avoid any danger.
All the 19 injured persons were admitted into local government hospital. Four among them were later taken to Shivamogga as they were found to be in need of advanced treatment.
Former MLA, Y S V Dutta, visited the hospital and spoke to the injured persons. Police sub-inspector, Rakesh C and staff controlled the people land the traffic. A case stands registered in Kadur police station about this accident.
