Mandya, May 28: In an unfortunate incident which happened at Muthathi, a famous tourist spot in Mandya district of the state, a pilgrim was partly gobbled up by a crocodile.

The tourist had ventured into River Cauvery for swimming at Muthathi in Malavalli taluk in the district on Sunday May 27. Venkatesh (52), a resident of Motagondanahalli in Magadi taluk, was accompanied by his family members to the attractive tourist spot which also houses the famous Lord Anjaneya temple. When Venkatesh was swimming in the river, a crocodile suddenly surfaced, attacked him and snatched him away. Although those who were nearby tried to save him, they were helpless in the presence of the predator that was quick, ruthless and deft in its moves.

A hunt was later launched for Venkatesh with the help of expert divers. Local divers searched the river and brought the lifeless body of Venkatesh, which was without a leg and a hand, out.

A report about this incident was filed at Halagur police station. The police said that warning signs about the presence of crocodiles in the area have been displayed on the riverbank but the tourists often neglect them. They have requested visitors to be very careful.
