Mangaluru, May 23: On the eighth anniversary of the air crash at the airport here on May 22, 2010 that claimed 158 lives, a programme was organized by the district administration, New Mangalore Port Trust and Airports Authority of India at the park at Tannirbavi that has been created at the spot where unidentified mortal remains of passengers were buried, on Monday May 22.

This year, a new memorial that resembles the wing of an aircraft has been created at the said site as a permanent memorial to the deceased passengers and aircraft crew. In the past, a temporary structure was built in the form of memorial with the names of victims of the air crash, but miscreants had demolished it. The memorial now built by New Mangalore Port Trust and Airports Authority of India is of permanent nature and has added to the view of the beauteous spot where trees have grown up on the banks of River Falguni.

Deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district, Sasikanth Senthil, additional deputy commissioner, Vaishali, zilla panchayat chief executive officer, Dr M R Ravi, assistant commissioner, Mahesh Karjagi, city corporation commissioner, Muhammed Nazeer. deputy commissioner of police, Uma Prashanth, in-charge director of the local airport, Abraham Koshi, chairman of New Mangalore Port Trust, Suresh P Shirwadkar, president of Air Crash Victims Families Committee, Muhammed Beary Yedapadavu and others paid tributes to the departed souls.
