Mangaluru: Fallen tree at Babugudde damages four vehicles, transformer, electric poles

Mangaluru, May 19: After a huge mango tree got uprooted at Babugudde here, four vehicles, a transformer and some electric poles were damaged on the night of Thursday May 17. The tree fell to the ground on account of heavy rain and strong wind.

Heavy rain coupled with thunder and lightning had been experienced in the city on Thursday night. Four cars parked under the tree were badly damaged due to the fallen tree. As the tree fell on power lines when falling, three electric poles and a transformer were badly damaged. As the incident happened late in the night, there was no movement of vehicles and people. Therefore there were no injuries or casualties.

As the incident resulted in power outage in the area, that part of the city plunged into darkness, and Mescom personnel got busy with repairs. The fire department personnel removed the tree on Friday morning.

Deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district, Sasikanth Senthil, said that a meeting is being convened on May 21 for holding discussions about taking precautionary measures against havoc that might be unleashed by rain fury during monsoon months. He agreed that measures like cutting down dangerous trees and branches and such other measures will have to be undertaken on a war footing.
