Mangalore, Sep 10: Renowned writer and columnist Y S Harihar Bhat (84), popularly known by his pen name 'Vichitra Etadka', breathed his last owing to old-age-related ailments at his residence in Etadka on Tuesday September 9.
Etadka entered the literary field through his manuscripted monthly magazine titled 'Sphoorthi' in 1947. Initially, he was known for his devotional songs. Although he wrote a few short stories, he was known widely for his poems. His writings impressed the illiterates too.
Etadka worked in all forms of literature and as a columnist, he earned fame for his column, 'Vichitra Rasayana'. Soft but affective irony, sharp writing style and simple narrations were the hallmarks of his writings. He wrote several works specifically for the children, and many of his works are yet to be published.
Etadka was actively involved with pro-Kannada activities. He was honoured at a function held at Pallathadka in 1996, under the presidentship of well-known litterateur Dr U R Anantmurthy. A cultural foundation, 'Vichitra Etadka' has been engaged with various cultural activities since long.
Etadka is survived by wife, seven sons and two daughters.
