Udupi, Sep 9: The stretch of the national highway 17 between Sasthan and Udupi is in a deplorable condition since the onset of monsoon this year, and the light rain that was received in the district during the last few days, have turned the pot holes into craters and craters into virtual pools.
In the afternoon on Sunday September 7, traffic on the highway on this stretch came to a standstill for nearly two hours. A bus, which was trying to avoid a huge pot hole neat Uppoor bus stand, rubbed a car, giving rise to verbal altercations between the drivers of the two vehicles. Although the issue was settled after some hard bargaining, the bus engine failed, complicating the issue further. In the meanwhile, restive vehicle drivers choked the highway in an attempt to making their way through the blocked road.
The policemen had to work hard to pave way for one-way traffic, after a queue of over six kilometres was formed either way. Two wheeler riders had to bath in red muck.
