Mangaluru: Renovated Bethany Convent Chapel inaugurated, golden jubilee of Sisters celebrated

Mangaluru, May 8: Bishop Dr Aloysious Paul D’Souza on May 8 inaugurated the renovated Bethany Convent chapel at Bendur.

The chapel was built in 1934 by Mgr RFC Mascarenhas, servant of God and thus it is a heritage of the institute. On the occasion 27 sisters celebrated the golden jubilee of their religious profession.

The eucharist was celebrated by Bishop D’Souza along with six other priests joining in the concelebration.



Fr Antony Shera parish priest of St Sebastian Church, Bendur preached an eloquent homily calling upon the jubilarians to count the blessings of God in their lives.

Sister Rose Celine, superior general greeted the jubilarians.

The celebration was followed by a felicitation programme and a sumptuous meal.

    I have fond memories of the Bethany Convent Chapel at Bendore because I received my first Holy Communion at this place and Mnsgr. Mascarenhas gave me the First Holy Communion more than seventy years ago. Those were the simple but happy days to remember. Those were the humble days where we were just happy and satisfied with all that we had, and God was kind and merciful to us.

    I still remember the Bethany nuns gave us a nice breakfast after the First Holy Communion. It was simple bread and butter with a small banana, but it was a great treat, and the Bethany nuns were kind and generous to us.

    All those kind blessings that we cherished from the time we received the First Holy Communion are still within us, and we are grateful for all that God has given us.
