Mangalore, Sep 6: The role being played by teachers in developing a sense of social responsibility and accountability and shaping the children into creative human beings, deserve to be highly appreciated, said Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat (ZP) president K Sucharita Shetty. He was speaking after presiding over a programme organized at Town Hall here, for observing teachers’ day at the district-level.
Our country boasts of a rich heritage of teachers. The present day teachers have the onus of carrying it further, he said. MLA U T Khader inaugurated the programme.
Teachers K R Gangadhar from Arantodu Sullia, who has been conferred with the national award for the year 2007-08 and state-level awardee Sridhar Ullal from Mangalore Nalyapadav, were felicitated on the occasion. District-level awardees Shivaram Thumbe, Annaiah, Edward D'Souza, Damodar, Sankappa Shetty, Gracy Pinto, Girija Bai, Diwakar Acharya, Frank Hillary D'Souza, Purandar Narayan Bhat, Sr Teresa Sequeira and Gangadhar N were conferred with awards and congratulated.
The teachers from city block, who retired during the last academic year, were honoured on the occasion.
District Kannada Sahitya Parishat president Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, ZP standing committee chairman Santosh Kumar Bhandary, ZP members A C Bhandary, Emilda Pinto, ZP executive officer A M Kunjappa and city deputy mayor Shakeela Kava participated as chief guests.
An amount of Rs 30,000 collected by the Teachers' Union for the treatment of ailing teacher Savitri Hulasogi, was handed over to her.
