Goa Church body says viral videos attempt to muzzle its voice

Panaji, Apr 29 (IANS): Strongly condemning anonymous videos clippings that criticise the influential Roman Catholic Church in Goa, its social wing on Saturday said that the same tantamount to mala fide attacks on the Church and attempts to muzzle its voice.

The Council for Social Justice and Peace, a social arm of the Church, said that it will investigate the allegations made against the relgioius institution in the videos that went viral on social media over two weeks, irrespective of a question mark over their authenticity.

"One video clipping said that the Church struck a secret deal with a political party which is mischievous, especially since the Church is inherently apolitical in nature and does not support or reject any particular party.

"However, the CSJP does, and should, exercise its right and responsibility to question the government policies that go against the public interests," the council's Executive Secretary Fr. Savio Fernandes said in a statement.

"Such efforts by vested interests will surely not muzzle the CSJP from its pursuit of monitoring policies, safeguarding public rights, creating awareness among people and taking positions in public interest, irrespective of the party in power," the statement added.

The statement called the videos as "handiwork of elements frustrated and upset" with the council's support vis-a-vis legitimate concerns on illegal conversion of land from green areas to commercial and settlement zones.

"The CSJP is in the process of ascertaining the allegations levelled against the Church in the video clips and it will probe the matter in its proper context," the statement said.

    Religious institutions should not dabble in politics by open support to certain policies that suit them and urge their followers to do likewise. While they have a right to express political views, they stand the risk of losing "charity" (tax free) status under the tax laws, so they have to begin to pay taxes on their collections. This is done under the tax laws of many countries.

    Rathan, Do not indulge in hate mongering on this forum. The church has never ever influenced its followers to vote for any particular party. The Manohar Parrikar Govt was voted only because of Parrikar . He is well educated & an able and a just Administrator. Nor does Manohar Parrikar encourage any Communal fringe elements from B,J,P & hence he was voted to power. That is why BJp is in power in Goa. However in Karnataka , it is just the opposite. There are hate mongers in B.J.P who indulkge in communal disruption . B.J.P openly supports them . Nobody is happy with Yeddiyoorappa, other than revolver Rani. Yeddy is hated by Amith Shah .He will be garbaged , & dumped by B.J.P very soon after the elections.

    Why the church can't express it's political view? Is it illegal.?. It may change its political view at any point of time when it is necessary. It is not forcing anyone and not even imposing social boycott on those who oppose its views.

    We all have seen that Shiroor swawi was openly campaigning for BJP even when he had planned to contest as independent candidate.

    Declan,
    Other religious leaders do it and accept it.
    The opposition is only for doing it in private and acting apolitical in public.

    @Ivar,
    Apolitical does not mean that they can't express their political view. Apolitical means that they are not representatives of any political party.

    Because their loyalty rests somewhere else. When the whole world appreciates India, they talk against it. When the monuments across Europe and US have been handed over to private companies for the maintenance, here they talk against Red fort being given to Dalmia group for maintenance.
    Even Cologne cathedral, the statue of Liberty have been adopted by private companies.

    Wah, wah, wah. Very convenient explanation. When it suits chhadis then they compare India with the West. So why not allow cow slaughter here when it is allowed and beef available in most restaurants in the West ? Culture, diversity, mentality, level of illiteracy, traditions, social customs, professional attitudes etc. between India and the West differ in monumental proportions. Cannot compare yaar.
