Udupi, Sep 2: KSRTC director MA Saleem said that the Muslim community is also plagued with dowry system and organizing mass marriage will be helpful to uplift the poor families from this jolt.
He was speaking at Halima Sabju Memorial Mass Marriage Ceremony at Halima Sabju Hall here on Sunday August 31.
"Such programmes will help to reduce dowry menace in our community. It is mandatory to give a part of our wealth to the needy persons. Leaders in our society should work in this regard," Saleem said.
As many as 6 couples from Guruvayanakere, Sakalespura, Guddekeri, Shimoga, Sringeri, Badhravati, Ucchila, Mangalore and Haveri took benefit of the mass marriage.
MLA Ragupati Bhat, former MP Vinay Kumar Sorake, Congress district president MA Gafoor spoke on the occasion.
Halima Sabju Trust presented gold ornaments, dress and watch as gift to the couples. Jaleel Saheb Udyavara, head of the trust, entrepreneur Jerry Dias, Abdul Azeez and Ayub Qasmi were also present.
