Bangalore, Aug 25: Dr R K Nallur, who has secured far more votes than his nearest contender, is sure to be declared electe as the president of the central Sahitya Parishat, the representative body of Kannada heritage and literature, on Tuesday. The term of the president is five years.
In the election held on Sunday, Nallur Prasad secured 17,372 votes as against his nearest rival Dr C Veeranna, writer, who lagged behind by 5,714 votes. Veeranna could muster only 11,658 votes.
Dr S Vidyashankar succeeded in getting only 4,295 votes while other four candidates namely Ma Chi Krishna, Prabhakar Rao, Lakshman Rao Goti and Sosale Javaraiah lost their deposits.
The above votes were polled in 176 polling booths from across the state. The final result will be announced by returning officer K Nagaraj on Tuesday,after counting the postal ballots. As the margin of votes is very wide, postal ballots are unlikely to have any impact on the final outcome of the election.
Bangalore, which boasts of the highest voters of the Parishat, registered a lowly turn out of 36% while Ramnagar district recorded the highest vote percentage of 72. Nallur Prasad raced ahead early in most of the districts. Veeranna could surpass the total votes secured by the winning candidate in only seven districts.
Most of the candidates supported by Nallur became the presidents of the district units of the parishat.
