Agrarian crisis: Over 35,000 farmers converge in Mumbai to protest

Mumbai, Mar 12 (IANS): For the second time in 10 months, Maharashtra farmers cracked the whip on the government to turn spotlight on the grave agrarian crises gripping the state by completing a long march to the Legislature, here on Monday.

More than an estimated 35,000 peasants -- men, women, youth and even seniors -- with lines of worry collectively writ on their weary faces, determinedly completed the 180-km long march over six days.

Organised by the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS), the farmers wing of Communist Party of India-Marxist, the farmers sporting red caps, red flags, beating drums and cymbals and the tribal blowing instrument --'tarpa', marched in disciplined unity as the Bharatiya Janata Party-Shiv Sena braced itself for the political fallout of the peasant power.

In a considerate gesture, the farmers abandoned their night's rest, to march from the Somaiya Grounds, Vidyavihar starting 2 a.m. (Monday) to reach the historic Azad Maidan at dawn, to avoid inconveniencing students appearing for the ongoing board examinations.

Wary of the potential ramifications as the farmers prepared to lay 'seige' on the Maharashtra Legislature on Monday afternoon, the state government hurriedly formed a high-powered six-member Ministerial Committee to discuss all issues with the peasants.

Farmers leader Ajit Nawale said that among the major demands are implementation of the farm loans waiver announced in June 2017, (after farmers in the state went on a 'strike'), then make the farmers completely debt-free, besides other demands.

"Considering the tremendous response we have evoked from across the state, the government cannot dismiss us lightly. If it continues to dilly-dally on the farm loans waiver or try to take us for a ride, it will face the consequences," Nawale told reporters late on Sunday.

AIKS Maharashtra President Ashok Dhavale pointed out that the crisis in the farmlands is very severe with "over 400,000 farmers committing suicides in the past 25 years".

"Agrarian distress is linked to malnutrition... The farming community is feeling betrayed by the Bharatiya Janata Party-led governments in Maharashtra and at the Centre," Dhavale said.

Congress leaders including state chief Ashok Chavan, Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil and Prithviraj Chavan, and the Nationalist Congress Party's President Sharad Pawar and Dhananjay Munde and Jitendra Awhad declared support to the marchers.

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray and Yuva Sena President Aditya Uddhav Thackeray turned up personally to welcome the farmers on Sunday evening.

Many of the marchers, braving the early summer heat, were seen reaching Mumbai with red and swollen eyes, broken or temporarily mended footwear, dusty, torn clothes, having barely managed a square meal or a proper bath during the past week as they started in Nashik on Wednesday.

However, they hoped that justice might be finally done to their cause.

Fadnavis could have avoided this huge protest if he had acted well in advance. 50,000 farmers walked 180kms, for six days. On their last day they walked all night making sure they didn’t disturb students of the SSC examinations.

Really, I respect and salute these farmers, Jai Kisan.

What a disciplined and well minded, well informed, well behaved farmers! Hats off to them. They deserve every honour and respect. Though without education, they think about Children attending the exams. Wow!
What a shame to our current "Qualified Leaders"! They must learn "education" from these people, who without any destruction, violence , carrying their demands on their weary heads, marching towards Mumbai with self belief and trust for justice.
These should lead India today , if we need to see progress. These are the ones who should be front runners for us and for our children's future. Wishing them all the best.
When we raise slogans for people like Yogis, Yogeshwar Rao etc, lets think a bit and learn from these great farmers. We need to wake up and free our minds from the bondage of current day rogue Leaders! Lets look at these and accept our short comings and make a paradigm shift.

BJP made Indians to count 70,000cr, 1.76lakh cr, 1.86lakh cr as scams, with the help of a CAG, who is enjoying luxury benefits for his own accounting errors. Today no body counts these numbers, as everyone knows they were fake.

Modi Govt., in its own admission has let Mallya, Chota Modi etc etc. to fled the country with looted tax payers money with more than 75,000crore. There is no accountability here. No media trials here. No FIR's.

Farmers are asking for nothing in comparison to big industrialists. Both take loans and farmers die, but Industrialists loan gets written off quietly. They then feature in worlds wealthiest people, who can have imported mushrooms from breakfast to dinner worth a lakh every day.

All Indians are standing besides their farming brothers and sisters. BJP may discredit them for their greed for power, but it is not going to deter.

....they get free electricity, they get subsdised fertilisers, interest free loan, every year loan waiver..now what they want...Narayan Reddy a succesful natural organic farmer in bangalore openly says in every seminar to remove all kind of subsidy on chemical fertilisers & stop loan waiver scheme, then automatically farmers will use home based organic gobar fertliser without spending a rupee extra, use their own saved seeds, less water , better crop thus no loan no suicide..any one listening to him..whole morchas are politically motivated , you just cant prevent loan burden & suicide by this way....

Where is Modi who ridiculed Congress' rule, where he who promised 'Achche Din' to farmers if he came to power ? Now, please don't call this the mismanagement of 70 years rule. When you have progressed to 10L suit, multi-numbers of foreign trips, why no farmer is satisfied in your four years of rule ? Why ?

Let Modi answer the farmers as well as the nation !

Genuine farmers protests are always welcome and good sign in Democracy but politically motivated and provoked agitation should be crushed. Demands should be genuine and feasable and not everything is free. Most of the people in the Kissan march are from people of 20000 fraud NGO gang whom licenses were cancelled by govt. They have come in mask of Farmers with Commies Flags to create disturbance in Mumbai. Opposition parties & antinational elements are also supporting the march to create law and order problem in Mumbai .

A farmer deserves to be looked after with all facilities because he earns our grains. What the politicians do ? Being paid by the hour/day they attend the parliament ? That too Modi government increased their perks by 200% ? Where does the money come from ? My tax ! Give me account of my money if you are not willing to keep the farmer in comfort !

When whales get away with billions of scams by renouncing Indian citizenship right under the nose of Chowkidar let the poor farmers also have their little share, but unfortunately they can't get away with it as they can't afford nationality of their choice.
