MUMBAI, Jul 28: Maharashtra government has issued a high alert after heavy rains lashed Mumbai for the third consecutive day.

Naval and Rescue teams have been put on a stand-by and the government has assured the people that it is prepared to deal with the situation.

Low-lying areas of the city and suburbs of Mumbai have been inundated due to the incessant rains that have hit the city in the last three days.

The government has also sounded an alert for all the low-lying areas around Mithi river.

Traffic snarls have also been reported, especially on the Eastern Express highway. Train services in the Western and Central lines have been slightly delayed. Flights operations at the Mumbai airport had taken a hit because of poor visibility conditions, but services have resumed.

The meteorological department said its Colaba station in south Mumbai had recorded 249.7 mm of rainfall while Santacruz station in north west Mumbai recorded 154.5 mm of rainfall over the last 24 hours till 0830 hours on Monday.

Though waterlogging was there in some low lying areas of the city and suburbs, but it did not affect flow of road traffic, civic officials said.

Waterlogging was reported from the vulnerable low-lying areas like Mumbai Central, Kalbadevi, Mazagaon, Parel, parts of Worli, Mahim, Dharavi, Sion, Ghatkopar, Chembur, Khar, Santacruz, Jogeshwari, Malad, Kandivali and Dahisar.

According to IMD officials, the torrential rains are being caused by factors like a cyclonic circulation in Gujarat and its adjoining area, an offshore trough lying between the north Maharashtra and Kerala coast and a low pressure in the Bay of Bengal.

Operations at the city's international airport were also largely unaffected due to the rain, a spokesperson said.

Meanwhile two persons were injured when their slums collapsed in the Rabale camp area of northeast Mumbai, civic officials said adding, both of them are out of danger.
